Job Description

BUS OPERATOR

SUMMARY

Safely operates transit buses in revenue service according to the State of Louisiana traffic regulations, transporting passengers over established city routes according to time schedule. Collects and counts passenger fares and verifies valid passes and identification cards. Conducts ridership surveys, reports bus stop and bus shelter problems, delays due to accidents, street closures, and passenger misconduct incidents. Provides passengers with information regarding bus routes, answers service questions and announces major bus stops and transfer points. Enforces company policies regulating passengers conduct. Operates other bus related equipment including wheelchair lifts and two way radio system.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Safely transports passengers over established city routes according to time schedule.
  • Operates electronic farebox to classify and record proper passenger fares. Verifies valid passes and identification cards. Monitors the farebox and notifies the base station and shop of irregularities. Issues, validates and accepts transfers according to company regulations.
  • Controls passenger activities on the bus (eating, drinking, smoking, misconduct, etc.) with tact.
  • Timely and accurately prepares written reports on accidents, vehicle inspections and defects, passenger misconduct and other incidents. Conducts ridership surveys when requested.
  • Aides disabled passengers into and out of vehicle by kneeling the transit bus or operating the wheelchair lifts. Secures wheelchairs to restraining devices to stabilize during trip.
  • Operates two way radio system in accordance with established company rules and regulations to communicate with base station, downtown terminal, and shop, information relevant to the safe and prompt movement of the transit vehicle. (i.e., reporting disruption of service such as vehicle accidents, street closures, mechanical problems, etc.).
  • Operates other bus system equipment including electronic destination signs, cam corder, and public address system.
  • In a courteous and professional manner provides bus patrons with requested information regarding bus routes, answers bus service questions and announces major bus stops, transfer points, downtown terminal, and major intersections.
  • Regulates heating, lighting, and cooling ventilating systems for passenger comfort.
  • Complies with local traffic regulations, observing traffic lights and other vehicles on the street to avoid accidents and other mishaps. Practices defensive driving techniques.
  • Makes pre-trip inspection of bus lights, brakes, mirrors, radio, etc. before departure for scheduled route. Monitors bus and engine conditions, reporting problems to maintenance.
  • Works, cooperates and communicates with fellow operators, supervisors, other company officials, passengers, and the general public in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Occasionally work under stressful situations.
  • Must be able to read and write English in a clear and concise manner to read bulletins and correspondence from headquarters and to complete reports, assignment sheets and other documents and forms as required.
  • Adheres to all standards of company uniform dress code and grooming. Maintains an acceptable attendance record, as well as being punctual and dependable.
  • Follows supervisors and mangers instructions.
  • Other duties as assigned.

OTHER DUTIES AS NEEDED

  • Attends training sessions and other meetings.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Applicant Must:

  • Be at least 21 years of age.
  • Have a high school diploma or its equivalent. (Equivalent related work experience will be considered)
  • Have a valid Commercial Drivers License (CDL) Class A or B with a class B Passenger Endorsement and air brakes certification (code 63) at least six months.
  • Be available to work any day of the week, any hours the bus system operates including nights, weekends, and holidays. (Varied shifts from 4:30 A.M. to 1:30 A.M.). May be called upon for special work outside regular service hours.
  • Available to train any day of the week, varied hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays for up to four weeks.
  • Show a stable work history that is verifiable for the past ten years.
  • Have no more than two (2) moving violations in the past five years and no convictions of a serious traffic violation (i.e., DWI, driving with a suspended, canceled or revoked license) in the past five years.
  • Have no convictions or deferred judgements of a felony crime in conflict with the duties of a transit bus operator.
  • Submit to random drug and alcohol testing in accordance with Federal Transit Authority Regulations.
  • Must be able to pass agility test with no limitations on the upper and lower back.
  • NOTE: Motor vehicle violations which will disqualify an applicant include, but are not limited to more than two moving violations; responsibility for more than one vehicle accident, and conviction involving drugs or alcohol, hit and run, or reckless driving.

PREFERRED BUT NOT REQUIRED

  • Previous driving experience as a bus operator with a transit system, or as an over the road coach operator.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Skilled in safe driving practices and good public relations.
  • Ability to safely operate transit buses and related equipment; calculate time and read bus schedules accurately.
  • Ability to deal courteously with the public, and to understand and respond in a tactful manner to the concerns of the elderly, disabled and other passengers riding public transit.

WORK ENVIRONMENT and PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Bus Operators are required to work in all types of weather conditions. They are required to work a varied shift that spans from 4:30 A.M. to 1:30 A.M., in addition to special driving assignments when necessary. Operators must be able to sit for a long period in a seat fastened with a seat belt, able to stoop, kneel, crouch, push and pull when necessary to assist and secure wheelchair riders.
